Infant Sign Language

Sign language is not only for deaf children. Communicate with your child before they can tell you in words what they want, feel or need. Signing with your child underscores your teachings and helps him or her connect with and understand you earlier.

All language ability is stored in the left hemisphere of the brain; signing utilizes the right brain as well as the left - furthering brain development in the child who has learned how to sign. Signing seems tailor made for babies: their motor- skills are far more developed than their skills for the articulation of language; therefore they can be involved and participate in communication with greater success earlier.

An article in USA Today (July 5, 2000) reported a study that showed eight-year-olds who had learned a simple form of baby sign language using invented signs, did better on IQ tests than comparable children who had not learned baby sign language.
